In Fuller v. Matthews, 2007 BCSC 444, Madam Justice Arnold-Bailey referred to several indicia of a “marriage-like relationship”, which include : 1) An exclusive intimate relationship; 2) The fact that the parties spend their non-working time together and live together as a couple during those periods in domestic circumstances. In Fuller, Arnold-Bailey J. referred to a four year relationship, but the appropriate length of time will depend on the parties and their circumstances; 3) Placement by mutual agreement of one party’s pieces of furniture into the other’s home along with the majority of his or her personal possessions; 4) Financial planning as a couple; 5) Contributing to and assisting with significant decisions, such as the sale of one parties’ home; 6) Representing their relationship to others as one of common-law; 7) Spending vacations together, sharing special holidays, such as Christmas, birthdays and special family events as a couple and with other family members; 8) Sharing responsibilities and pleasures with the children of the other person; 9) Assisting in the care of the other party’s family members in times of need; 10) Making shared plans for the future; 11) Contributing to a joint family venture, such as the renovation of a home or garden.
