Although a claim for past loss of income is often characterized as a separate head of damages, it is a component of the loss of earning capacity, being a claim for the loss of the value of the work that the injured person was unable to perform because of the injury. In general, the value of the plaintiff’s capacity to earn is equivalent to the value of the earnings she would have received, in the past or the future, had the tort not been committed. See, for example, Crimeni v. Chandra, 2015 BCCA 131, at para. 15.
