What is the difference between the period of imprisonment and period of long-term supervision order?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from R. v. A.T., 2016 ONCJ 221 (CanLII):

[25] The period of imprisonment and the period of the long-term supervision order are separate aspects of sentence. Each serves a different purpose. The principle objective of a prison sentence is punishment in accordance with the sentencing principles set out in the Criminal Code. The two objectives of an LTSO are to ensure that the public is protected during supervised reintegration into society and to ensure that rehabilitation and reintegration is successful. R. v. Ipeelee 2012 SCC 13 at para 48, R v. LM 2008 SCC 31 at para 47. Long Term Offender
