What is the defence of justification in a defamation case?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Holden v Hanlon, 2019 BCSC 622 (CanLII):

As noted, the defence of justification turns on the sting of the impugned statement and whether it would have a different effect on a reader than the truth; see also Jay v. Hollinger Canadian Newspapers, 2002 BCSC 1655 at para. 53, where McEwan J. stated that justification can only be assessed by comparing the sting of the published words with the effect of the actual facts.
