When will a joint custody order be enforceable?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from J.K.R. v. M.C.C.H., 2010 BCSC 32 (CanLII):

In Robinson v. Filyk, at para. 16, Huddart J.A. stated that: Geographical separation may make a joint custody order unworkable, but it makes a joint guardianship order desirable when a child spends considerable periods of time with the non-custodial parent and that parent is the obvious person to assume the care-giving of the child upon the death or incapacity of the custodial parent.
