What is the common law duty of a dealer in new cars dealer in B.B.C. to ensure the sale of a vehicle is valid?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Insurance Corp. of British Columbia v. Scheelar, 2003 BCSC 677 (CanLII):

I am satisfied there is no legislated or common law duty on I.C.B.C. to ensure that a person who represents himself as the registered owner is the lawful owner. The same line of reasoning followed in Sturgeon v. Lui (supra), impels me to a conclusion that no duty is owed by I.C.B.C. to ensure that a valid sale has taken place from a dealer in new cars to a purchaser who presents documents for transfer that are facially valid.
