The grand jury is not a creature or subordinate of the court but 'insofar as its jurisdiction is concerned, it is an independent body' to which the law has afforded 'the widest possible latitude in the exercise of (its) powers' and has 'insisted that in the absence of a clear constitutional or legislative expression they may not be curtailed' (People v.
