California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from Daniels v. McKinney, 146 Cal.App.3d 42, 193 Cal.Rptr. 842 (Cal. App. 1983):

[146 Cal.App.3d 50] Attorneys' fees may properly be awarded under Code of Civil Procedure section 1021.5 where the vindication of jail inmates' rights to reasonable exercise periods and other conditions of detention also benefit other inmates similarly situated. (Inmates of Sybil Brand Inst. for Women v. County of Los Angeles (1982) 130 Cal.App.3d 89, 112-114, 181 Cal.Rptr. 599; see also Jordan v. Multnomah County (1982) 694 F.2d 1156.) Respondents concede this point.
