3 Labor Code section 4850 provides that law enforcement officers, firefighters and certain other personnel temporarily or permanently disabled in the course of duty are entitled to a leave of absence without loss of salary in lieu of workers compensation benefits for up to one year or until retirement on a disability pension. (Ritchie v. Workers' Comp. Appeals Bd.(1994) 24 Cal.App.4th 1174, 1180, 29 Cal.Rptr.2d 722.)
