his or her excuse prior to dismissing the juror. (People v. Duff (2014) 58 Cal.4th 527, 560, fn. 15.) Whether the court can best accommodate a juror's illness by a continuance or replacement with an alternate is a matter committed to the trial court's discretion. (Id. at p. 561.) "[I]n the right circumstances, an absence of a day or less may warrant excusal." (Id. at pp. 560-561.)
