What is the purpose of interim orders in family matters?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Nestor v. Nestor, 2019 BCCA 203 (CanLII):

In so far as interim orders in family matters are concerned, it is sometimes said that the general purpose of these orders is to provide “rough justice” between the parties. They are not meant to equate to the results after a trial, at which point a final determination will have been made as to the issues: Ducharme v. Rempel, 2016 BCCA 198 at para. 40. The primary purpose of such orders is to maintain the status quo between the parties: Kouznetsova v. Kouznetsov, 2014 BCCA 160 at para. 44.
