In what circumstances will the police not abandon a crime scene before a proper investigation has been completed?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from Carlos M., In re, 220 Cal.App.3d 372, 269 Cal.Rptr. 447 (Cal. App. 1990):

6 This option also could have impeded the investigation by permitting a deterioration of the extant physical evidence by lapse of time. In analogous situations the courts have recognized that police need not abandon a crime scene before a proper investigation has been completed, in order to transport a victim to the site where the suspect is located, when the transportation of the suspect to the victim involves only a minimal additional intrusion on the suspect's freedom. (People v. Gatch (1976) 56 Cal.App.3d 505, 508-510, 128 Cal.Rptr. 481.)
