Under these principles, officers are permitted to provide truthful information to a suspect about potential sentences, but may not couple threats of a harsh sentence with promises of leniency in exchange for the suspect's cooperation. (People v. Ray, supra, 13 Cal.4th at p. 340.) Here, the detectives told appellant that his refusal to explain his conduct could result in a life sentence because a jury was likely to convict him of murder on the basis of the video recording.
