The following excerpt is from Spencer v. Spencer, 252 Cal.App.2d 683, 60 Cal.Rptr. 747 (Cal. App. 1967):

'But in this state, where an attorney has no lien in the absence of an agreement therefor (citations), it has been held from an early date that the attorney's remedy for a wrongful discharge is by an independent action.'
