In what circumstances will a sheriff's officer have a duty to warn the family of a patient who has committed suicide?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from Kimberly M. by Cobbs v. Los Angeles Unified School Dist., 209 Cal.App.3d 1326, 242 Cal.Rptr. 612 (Cal. App. 1987):

Johnson v. County of Los Angeles, supra, 143 Cal.App.3d 298, 191 Cal.Rptr. 704, sheriff's officers employed by the County detained an obviously suicidal schizophrenic and assured his wife that he would be cared for in a custodial setting. But they then released him without notifying his family, after which he committed suicide. We found the officers had entered into a special relationship with decedent and plaintiffs, giving rise to a duty to warn. (Id., at p. 311, 191 Cal.Rptr. 704.)
