In a search for evidence of an illegal car search, can police ask for the consent of a suspect to travel to the crime scene?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Vasilkov, A142806 (Cal. App. 2016):

suspect, arrangements may be made for a subsequent confrontation with the witness. In addition, the consent of the suspect may be sought. As . . . suggested in People v. Mickelson [(1963)] 59 Cal.2d 448, 454, rather than conduct an illegal car search the officers could have requested defendant 'to accompany the officers the few blocks to the [crime scene] . . . for possible identification . . . .'
