In a criminal case charging defendants with holding other persons in slavery or involuntary servitude in violation of federal law, what is the state of the law on the issue?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from Moss v. Superior Court (Ortiz), 17 Cal.4th 396, 71 Cal.Rptr.2d 215 (Cal. 1998):

Our conclusion is consistent with decisions of lower federal courts which have addressed the issue in criminal cases charging defendants with holding other persons in slavery or involuntary servitude in violation of federal law. (See, e.g., United States v. Mussry (9th Cir.1984) 726 F.2d 1448, 1453.)
