In a personal injury case, in what circumstances will a judge set a date for spousal support?

The following excerpt is from Sloan v. Sloan, 2009 CanLII 29488 (ON SC):

This is precisely the situation in the case before me. In addition, the issue of spousal support is a significant issue. As Justice Gillese notes in Ierullo v. Ierullo, supra, “…spousal support could not be set absent a consideration of all of the relevant factors.’’ In my view, the determination of the issue of continued spousal support is best made in a trial setting, where the presiding judge has the benefit of viva voce evidence and is in the best position to make findings of credibility on the issues between the parties.
