Is a plaintiff's refusal to seek the advice of counsel for the purposes of postponement or adjournment of a claim?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Fidler v. Forensic Psychiatric Institute, a Hospital, 2015 BCSC 1241 (CanLII):

The plaintiff expressed similar sentiments regarding his refusal to seek the advice of counsel in relation to his claim in Fidler v. Burns Lake (Village). I find, as did Punnett J. in that case, that the plaintiff should have taken appropriate advice and did not. I do not accept the plaintiff’s reasons for refusing to seek the advice of counsel, and consequently find that the lack of such advice cannot be grounds for postponement.
