Is it appropriate for a self-represented party in a family law case to seek advice from the Court of Appeal on how to avoid paying a lawyer?

Alberta, Canada

The following excerpt is from LDW v. KDM, 2011 ABQB 800 (CanLII):

I am also mindful of the following comments of Justice Pazaratz in Tomlinson v. Hornick, 2008 CarswellOnt 420: Family litigation has become prohibitively expensive, with financial consequences adversity impacting the children the parties purport to protect. Where only one of the parties hires a lawyer, an unfortunate dynamic can arise where the unrepresented party loses track -- or concern -- about ongoing costs. While self-represented parties must be shown consideration and patience, we must be careful not to bend or ignore the rules to such an extent that litigants start to perceive there is a strategic advantage to not hiring a lawyer.
