How have the courts in BC dealt with the issue of costs in family law cases?

A very helpful review and analysis of the issue of costs in family law cases can be found in the recent decision of Madam Justice Humphries in Hansen v. Mantei-Hansen, 2013 BCSC 1854. In that case, following a five day trial in which the principal issue was the primary residence of two young children, Madam Justice Humphries ordered joint custody with primary residence to the father, who lived in Nelson, B.C., rather than the mother who lived in Regina, Saskatchewan. She then ordered that the parties bear their own costs. Subsequently, the father sought to revisit the costs award on the basis that he had made a formal offer to settle for joint custody with primary residence with him.
