Does the privilege against self-incrimination apply to a defendant in a civil proceeding?

"New York", United States of America

The following excerpt is from Vance A., Matter of, 105 Misc.2d 254, 432 N.Y.S.2d 137 (N.Y. Fam. Ct. 1980):

While United States v. Kordel, 397 U.S. 1, 90 S.Ct. 763, 25 L.Ed.2d 1 involved "simultaneous civil and criminal proceedings" and is cited as authority favorable to their maintenance, in fact any claim as to the privilege against self-incrimination was "expressly disavowed" (397 U.S. at pp. 3, 5, 90 S.Ct. at pp. 764, 765), the civil defendant being a corporation.
