8 Actually, the grand jury has been referred to as 'an appendage of the court' exercising 'judicial functions,' and its members as 'officers of the court.' In re Gannon, 1886, 69 Cal. 541, 11 P. 240, 241. It also has been referred to as a 'judicial tribunal.' Greenberg v. Superior Court, 1942, 19 Cal.2d 319, 323, 121 P.2d 713.
