Does Section 654 of the California Criminal Code prohibit multiple punishments under the same law?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Pinon, 189 Cal.Rptr.3d 920, 238 Cal.App.4th 1232 (Cal. App. 2015):

Section 654, subdivision (a), provides, An act or omission that is punishable in different ways by different provisions of law shall be punished under the provision that provides for the longest potential term of imprisonment, but in no case shall the act or omission be punished under more than one provision. Section 654 precludes multiple punishments for a single act or indivisible course of conduct. (People v. Hester (2000) 22 Cal.4th 290, 294, 92 Cal.Rptr.2d 641, 992 P.2d 569.) Section 654 does not preclude multiple convictions but only multiple punishments for a single act or indivisible course of conduct. [Citation.] The proscription against double punishment ... is applicable where there is a course of conduct which violates more than one statute and comprises an indivisible transaction punishable under more than one statute....
