Does appellant have to plead guilty to two separate sexual assault charges at the same time?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Shea, 39 Cal.App.4th 1257, 46 Cal.Rptr.2d 388 (Cal. App. 1995):

Each of the two cases had separate victims and arose from separate incidents. Although appellant pleaded guilty to the four charges on the same day before the same judge and was later sentenced on all four convictions on the same day, the two cases were "brought and tried separately" ( 667, subd. (a); see People v. Smith (1992) 7 Cal.App.4th 1184, 9 Cal.Rptr.2d 491), and appellant does not contend otherwise.
