8. In California, when an accomplice testifies in a manner that implicates the defendant, the trial court must sua sponte instruct the jury that such testimony "is to be viewed with distrust and that the defendant may not be convicted on the basis of an accomplice's testimony unless it is corroborated." People v. Hayes, 21 Cal. 4th 1211, 1271 (1999).
