Does a defendant need to explain their actions in light of their knowledge concerning the victim?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from The People v. Rios, H034085, No. F00788 (Cal. App. 2010):

explain his [or her] action in light of his [or her] knowledge concerning the victim" (People v. Humphrey, supra, 13 Cal.4th 1073, 1094), at the time of the shooting appellant did not know the decedents and others on Bixby Street were gang members or associates of gang members. Nor would the evidence tend to prove that appellant actually believed in the need for self-defense for the same reason.
