What is the proper division of family property and spousal support?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from M.E.C. v. D.E.J., 2009 BCSC 519 (CanLII):

Because there are concurrent applications for the division of family property and spousal support, it is appropriate to first divide or reapportion the family assets before determining the issue of spouse support (see Narayan v. Narayan, 2006 BCCA 561, 62 B.C.L.R. (4th) 116). On June 26, 2006 a declaration was made that the parties had no reasonable prospect of reconciliation.
