Can a self-represented party to a family law negotiation do not seek independent legal advice?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Osmachko v Osmachko, 2018 BCSC 792 (CanLII):

See also Deboer v. Deboer, 2017 BCSC 735 at para. 24, where a self-represented party to a family law negotiation was urged to obtain independent legal advice and had time to hire counsel, but decided against doing so. Mr. Justice MacKenzie found that there was no evidence suggesting prevention or discouragement of the party from doing so, and rejected the argument that the absence of independent legal advice vitiated the particular separation agreement.
