In what circumstances will an employee be able to take a better position elsewhere?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from Vorvis v. Insurance Corp. of British Columbia, 1982 CanLII 266 (BC SC):

In Cox v. Philips Industries Ltd. an employee had been persuaded not to take a better position elsewhere upon the promise that he would be given preferred treatment by the defendant. He had been led to believe that his services were highly valued and that he had a secure future with the company but was demoted on very flimsy grounds and out of spite. He suffered harassment in his job thereafter. This led to a breakdown in his mental and physical health and a forced resignation. He was granted £500 as damages for distress.
