Compensatory support, which relates to the first two objectives, is intended to provide redress for economic disadvantage arising from the marriage or the conferral of an economic advantage on the other spouse. Non-compensatory support, which relates to the last two objectives, aims to narrow the gap between the needs and means of the spouses on marital breakdown: Chutter v. Chutter, 2008 BCCA 507.
