What is the definition of a class and what is the criteria for defining a class?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from MacLean et al. v. Telus Corporation and Telus Communications Inc., 2006 BCSC 766 (CanLII):

The class definition must simply state objective criteria by which the class members can be identified: Western Canadian Shopping Centre v. Dutton, [2001] 2 S.C.R. 534, 2001 SCC 46 at ¶ 38. The requirement to show that the class is defined sufficiently narrowly is not an onerous one. Not everyone in the class has to share the same interest in the resolution of the common issue. However the class should not be unnecessarily broad: Hollick at ¶ 20 and 21.
