What is the current state of the law on parental separation?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from Garrick v. Saporowski, 2015 ONCJ 607 (CanLII):

It is normally in the interests of children to continue and to encourage their relationships with both parents following the separation of their parents. The ultimate goal is to establish, maintain and promote relationships which are of significance and support for a child. See: Young v. Young, 1993 CanLII 34 (SCC), [1993] 4 S.C.R. 3 (S.C.C.). Children generally benefit from contact with both parents. The child should have maximum contact with both parents if it is consistent with the child’s best interests. Gordon v. Goertz 1996 CanLII 191 (SCC), [1996] 2 S.C.R. 27.
