What is the test for reasonable expectation of privacy under s. 8 of the Charter?

Alberta, Canada

The following excerpt is from R. v. La, 2012 ABQB 192 (CanLII):

A reasonable expectation of privacy is a key concept in s. 8 Charter jurisprudence. A search that is directed at a target for which a person has no expectation of privacy can never offend the Charter prohibition against unreasonable search and seizure: Hunter v. Southam Inc., 1984 CanLII 33 (SCC), [1984] 2 S.C.R. 145 at 159-160, 11 DLR (4th) 641.
