The following excerpt is from R. v. Willis, 2015 MBQB 114 (CanLII):
It is noteworthy that no societal consensus has emerged that murder should not be punishable in circumstances of duress. Canada and other western democracies recognize that the sanctity of life is a general principle which is subject to limited and narrow exceptions and situations in which notions of personal autonomy and dignity may prevail. It does not, however, permit the deliberate killing of innocent victims. (See Rodriguez, supra, at 598-599 and 605; Carter v. Canada (Attorney General) at paras. 63 and 127)
