Can the police search the seized packages without a warrant?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Riegler, 127 Cal.App.3d 317, 179 Cal.Rptr. 530 (Cal. App. 1981):

Finally, we cannot accept respondent's argument that the police could search the seized packages without a warrant because "their contents could be inferred from their outward appearance." (Arkansas v. Sanders, supra, 442 U.S. 753, 99 S.Ct. 2586 at p. 2593, fn. 13, 61 L.Ed.2d 235.) 5 Nothing in the appearance of the packages in question would indicate they contained contraband.
