Can an employee be found liable for breach of contract for non-payment of expenses?

Canada (Federal), Canada

The following excerpt is from Sheguiandah First Nation v Shawanda, 2014 CanLII 103795 (CA LA):

69. In Bolton v. Hartley Bay Indian Band, the employee was absent for four days without permission and did not obey an order to report for work. She fraudulently obtained an authorisation for travel and breached her material conditions of employment when she authorised expenses for herself and family members. The employee then falsely alleged that the Employer had breached patient confidentiality. The arbitrator found that the termination was for cause.
