A trial court has broad discretion to regulate witness examinations (Evid. Code, 765), and its orders are to be reviewed for an abuse of that discretion. (People v. Tafoya (2007) 42 Cal.4th 147, 175.) Evidence Code section 772, subdivision (a) provides that "[t]he examination of a witness shall proceed in the following phases: direct examination, cross-examination, redirect examination, recross-examination, and continuing thereafter by redirect and recross-examination."
