In what circumstances will a law be interpreted to avoid absurd results?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from R. v. Pilarinos, 2002 BCSC 452 (CanLII):

In Canadian Pacific v. Ontario, supra, Gonthier J. pointed out that a law will be interpreted to avoid absurd results. Further, the legislature does not intend unjust or inequitable results, and a statute will be interpreted to avoid such results.
