Can a defendant who fired his gun while standing in front of an oncoming police officer cause injury or death?

California, United States of America

The following excerpt is from People v. Chriss, C088363 (Cal. App. 2020):

In addition, by firing his gun, defendant created risk to responding police officers. The police officers themselves may be shot and they may return fire, which also could result in injury or death. Even without a witness to describe where or how defendant was pointing his gun, defendant's conduct certainly demonstrates a " ' "disregard of human life or an indifference to consequences." ' " (People v. Alonzo, supra, 13 Cal.App.4th at pp. 539-540.)
