A defendant's own confession is very probative and damaging evidence. (Arizona v. Fulminante (1991) 499 U.S. 279, 296.) In the case of a coerced confession, as appellant alleges here, a reviewing court must "exercise extreme caution before determining that the admission of the confession at trial was harmless."
