Are legitimate business expenses a proper deduction from gross income when calculating a payor’s support obligation?

British Columbia, Canada

The following excerpt is from A.H. v. F.L., 2013 BCSC 1444 (CanLII):

Legitimate business expenses are a proper deduction from gross income when calculating a payor’s support obligation, provided that the expenses are reasonable: Karisik v. Chow, 2010 BCCA 548 at para. 64. The authorities establish that business expense deductions should not be automatically permitted because those deductions were permitted under the Income Tax Act. Rather, the court must make a determination whether the deductions claimed are reasonable.
