What is the effect of a stay of execution on a claim against a defendant in a personal injury case?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from Fisher v. Soroka, 2021 ONSC 7971 (CanLII):

Third, while a stay “is intended to offer some protection to an appellant against payments it may not have to make” (see Antunes v. Limen Structures Ltd., 2016 ONCA 61, at para. 11), in this case there is no doubt of the defendant’s debt to the plaintiffs. The parties differ only as to how that debt is to be satisfied.
