What is the standard of division of assets at the date of trial?

Alberta, Canada

The following excerpt is from S.I.B. v. M.D.B., 2006 ABQB 557 (CanLII):

There was some discussion as to whether all of the assets should be valued as at the date of trial. The unfortunate reality is that two households are more expensive to maintain than is one household, and I find that the parties’ expenses have not been unreasonable, and there has been no dissipation. All assets shall be valued as at the date of trial: Hodgson v. Hodgson, [2005] A.J. No. 22, 2005 ABCA 13. Any problems that might arise by using the date of trial for valuation and division are to be dealt with under s. 8.
