The following excerpt is from B.C. Birth Reg. No. 77-09-010612 (Re), 1989 CanLII 5194 (BC SC):
For example, in both cases the mother had custody of the child or children in question and the natural father did not see the child or children for significant periods of time. In Re Adoption Nos. 60-09-017014 and 62-09-027718, supra, the father saw his children "from time to time" and in Blyth v. Blyth, supra, the father did not see the child for almost five years. Yet, despite this physical absence, in both cases the father was not held to have abandoned his child or children. In the former case, the court pointed out that the superintendent reported that the father "maintained a concerned parental interest in his children". In the latter case, the court described the father's attitude towards the child for some years as "indifferent", but pointed out that the father was aware that good care was being taken of the child.
