Is a defendant liable only for damages to which no one else contributed?

Ontario, Canada

The following excerpt is from Drady v. Canada, 2007 CanLII 27970 (ON SC):

A plea that the defendant is liable only for a damages to which no one else contributed causally would exclude a right to contribution but, given the principles of causation propounded in cases such as Athey v. Leonati, 1996 CanLII 183 (SCC), [1996] 3 S.C.R. 458, it might also appear be a remarkably limited claim.
